As always we open the show with Dario in his office, this time he is talking to Fenix, Aerostar, and Drago. Dario says he wants them in the trios tournament, but remembers they lost in the first round last year because of issues between Drago and Aerostar. Instead he makes a match between Aerostar and Drago, and tells Fenix he will team with PJ Black and Jack Evans.
Aerostar vs. Drago (Aztec Medallion)
This wasn’t announced as a medallion match a minute ago, but I guess it is. These two had a lot of really great matches last season, and this was another great match to add to their series. We got a pretty good back and forth match, with the most noteworthy thing unfortunately being a nasty botch of a springboard from Aerostar. Credit to Drago for saving the match after that point, and the flow wasn’t hurt too badly. Aerostar pins Drago *** ¼
Johnny Mundo is training when Taya walks in and they flirt a little. Taya tells Mundo that she demanded Dario give him one of the Aztec Medallions, but instead Mundo will have to face Cage for it in a steel cage. Cage in a cage, an exact quote from Johnny Mundo whose gimmick I now completely understand, he’s in a martial arts movie.
Fenix, PJ Black, and Jack Evans vs. The Disciples of Death (Trece, Barrio Negro, and El Siniestro de la Muerte)(w/Catrina)(Trios Tournament First Round)
The DoD were just bodies in this match for Fenix to fly around while Jack and PJ did their goofy antics. It was maybe the best match that trio has ever had, but that’s because they just got out of the way. Fenix pins Trece ***
Back in Dario’s office with Ivelisse, Angelico, and Son of Havoc. He tells them that the team are actually in the trios tournament, and the tournament will be to crown the new trios champions. The current champions have a bye straight to the final next week, which will be a four way elimination match.
We then see Catrina confronting the Disciples of Death for losing again, this leads to one of the disciples literally ripping the hearts out of the other two. Yeah.
Matanza Cuerto (w/Dario Cuerto) (c) vs. Mil Muertes (w/Catrina)(Lucha Underground Championship)
This is one of the matches that this season was probably building to, with the two monsters going head to head. This was less of a match and more of a brawl however, and a pretty unspectacular one to be completely honest. It felt like they were holding something back, and with the non-finish of this match it’s clear something bigger is on the way later. No Contest ** ¾
Back in the police office and Captain Marie is met with another officer, who tells her that Boyle Heights is his jurisdiction and that “his employer” thinks she should drop the case against Dario. Honestly this stuff is probably the most important for the larger story of the show, but it all feels too goofy right now and I just can’t get invested into it.
A bit of a step down from last week’s episode, but we still got three awesome matches and there is enough interesting stuff going on to hold my attention.
