wXw 16 Carat Gold Tournament 2016 Day 2 Review

Air Date: 12/3/16

It’s the second day of the tournament, it’ll be interesting to see if day 2 lives up to the awesomeness that was the first day.

Tyler Bate vs. Silas Young

Non tournament match to start off, Tyler Bate was so incredibly over in front of this crowd which is no surprise because he’s great. These two had a very good mini epic match with lots of stiff looking strikes and general greatness from Bate. Tyler Bate pins Silas Young with a brainbuster *** ¼

Shane Strickland and David Starr vs. Big Daddy Walter and Da Mack

Strickland and Walter both had awesome tournament matches last night, and had this great tag match tonight. Strickland was flying all over the place but Starr was really the star (no pun intended) of his team with a great mix of high flying and striking. Walter was also so much fun bullying the two smaller guys, while Da Mack was probably the weakest man in this match and didn’t really leave much of an impression. Starr pins Mack with the Product Placement *** ½

Ilja Dragunov (w/Adam Polak and Julian Nero) vs. Axel Dieter Jr (16 Carat Gold Quarter Final)

The atmosphere was crazy for this, with the crowd completely against Axel Dieter Jr. Everything Dieter did was met with boos and chants of “We Want Marty” which really added to the match even if it wasn’t the intended reaction. The match itself was pretty basic to start but had a really great, intense finishing stretch. Dragunov looked far better here than against Speedball, and I am quickly become a fan of Axel Dieter even if the wXw crowd seem to hate him. Axel Dieter Jr pins Ilja with a bridging Regalplex *** ¼

Trevor Lee vs. Speedball Mike Bailey vs. Angelico vs. Marty Scurll

This was just an insane multiman spotfest that never really slowed down. Crazy dives and strikes everywhere, including a mental dive from Angelico off of the stage. Marty Scurll makes Angelico submit to the Crossface Chicken Wing *** ¾

Zack Sabre Jr vs. Will Ospreay (16 Carat Gold Quarter Final)

Commentary called this match a dream match and oh boy did they deliver just that. Much of the match was built around Zack working over Will’s neck, which eventually lead to the submission. On top of that you had Will trying to outwrestle Zack, which pissed of Sabre and a pissed off Zack Sabre is the best Zack Sabre. The only real complaint I have is that Will’s strikes and non-high flying moves didn’t look at all impactful, which hurt things. Zack Sabre Jr submits Will Ospreay **** ¼

Melanie Gray vs. Toni Storm

This was set up after Toni was attacked by Melanie on day 1 after she beat Leva Bates. Melanie was pretty good in this, but Toni Storm was the star and sold her ass off. Super fun sprint match that never felt like it was going too long. Melanie Gray pins Toni Storm with an Ace Crusher ***

Timothy Thatcher vs. Sami Callihan (16 Carat Gold Quarter Final)

This match had the same issue as Thatcher’s match from day 1, everything was well worked but there was no real intensity. To Sami’s credit he tried to fire Thatcher up and at times they acted like this was a really great, classic match but I never got that impression. Don’t get me wrong, this was a very good match when everything was said and done but it took a hell of a lot of work on Sami’s part to bring it out of Thatcher. Sami Callihan submits Timothy Thatcher *** ¾

Karsten Beck (c) vs. Jurn Simmons vs. John Klinger vs. Absolute Andy (wXw Unified World Wrestling Championship)

This match had a real big fight feel to it, which is helped by the fact that these are four very big men. Unfortunately the match itself failed to deliver, it was just very long and boring with not much to it. Jurn Simmons pins Karsten Beck with a piledriver to win the title ** ½

Overall: 6.0

This show wasn’t quite as good as day 1, but was still really great and well worth the watch. Roll on the finals!
