NJPW G1 Climax 26 Day 6 Review

Air Date: 27/7/16

TenKoji (Hiroyoshi Tenzan and Satoshi Kojima) and Manabu Nakanishi vs. Togi Makabe, David Finlay, and Juice Robinson

Some fun young boy beating in this match leading to Finlay looking great running wild on Kojima. I enjoyed the Makabe and Tenzan interaction here even though I have no faith in their match delivering. Kojima pins David Finlay with a Lariat ** ¾

Naomichi Marufuji and Hirooki Goto vs. Los Ingobernables de Japon (BUSHI and SANADA)

This was a very fun, high energy tag match. Lots of cool looking spots and brawling between the two teams. Marufuji pins BUSHI with Sliced Bread ** ½

Jushin Thunder Liger, Tiger Mask (IV), and Captain New Japan vs. Hiroshi Tanahashi, KUSHIDA, and Ryusuke Taguchi

Fine match, Tanahashi took a lot more offence than you would expect given how beat up he supposedly is and could easily take this as a night off. KUSHIDA makes Captain New Japan submit with the Hoverboard Lock ** ½

Bullet Club (Tama Tonga, Yujiro Takahashi, and Bad Luck Fale) vs. CHAOS (Kazuchika Okada, Tomohiro Ishii, and Gedo)

Another super fun sprint, god bless the CHAOS team who seemed like they gave this match their all. The shitty Bullet Club B Team even worked super hard in this. Hell of a match. Yujiro pins Gedo ***

YOSHI-HASHI [2] vs. Yuji Nagata [4] (G1 Climax 26 B-Block)

Nagata came into this match pissed off, which is the best kind of Nagata, and completely went after YOSHI-HASHI’s injured arm and shoulder. We got some brutal looking strikes from Yuji he wrenched in the Nagata lock for what felt like forever. YOSHI-HASHI put up a valiant fight, he has some seriously cool offence, but couldn’t beat the veteran Nagata. Yuji Nagata pins YOSHI-HASHI with a Backdrop Hold *** ½

EVIL [2] vs. Katsuhiko Nakajima [2] (G1 Climax 26 B-Block)

EVIL worked over Nakajima for much of the early portions of this match with some stiff as hell offence, including a series of brutal looking forearms. Nakajima made a comeback and the two had a great back and forth to end the match. I hadn’t seen much of Nakajima before this tournament but I’ve very quickly become a fan of his. Nakajima pins EVIL with a Brainbuster *** ¾

Tetsuya Naito [2] vs. Toru Yano [0] (G1 Climax 26 B-Block)

Toru Yano’s schtick is starting to grow on me, or it might just be because of how much I like Naito’s work right now, because I actually kind of enjoyed this match. Naito and Yano trying to out cheat each other was kind of fun. Fine match that didn’t overstay it’s welcome. Naito pins Yano with Destino ***

Kenny Omega [2] vs. Tomoaki Honma [4] (G1 Climax 26 B-Block)

Speaking of wrestlers I dislike, Kenny Omega was a little bit more serious in this match and much better for it. He’s still a little bit too goofy all the time for my tastes, but things like him hesitating from hitting a moonsault because his leg is hurting, which in turn causes it to be reversed shows that he is actually a very good wrestler. That may be the most frustrating thing about Kenny, he can be great but acts like a fool too often to really be taken seriously. The match itself was very good, if overly long, and even though Honma is someone that can win he still works very well as the underdog babyface. Kenny pins Honma with the One Winged Angel *** ½

Michael Elgin [0] vs. Katsuyori Shibata [2] (G1 Climax 26 B-Block)

These two men are having a very good tournament and this was another stellar match to add to it. After a brief period of Shibata trying to outwrestle Elgin the match devolves into a straight up fight. Both men take turns beating the other up in a great sequence and then just start throwing bombs at each other. Elgin was selling his arm for periods, which is the area Shibata was focusing on early on and then went back to. The only real complaint is that there was a period in the middle which kind of dragged, but other than that this was a superb match. Elgin pins Shibata with a sitout powerbomb **** ¼

Overall: 6.0

This was a very good show, all of the tournament matches delivered and the opening tags were all at least decent.
