Lucha Underground 2/3/16 Review

Air Date: 2/3/16

The show starts with Mil Muertes confronting Catrina for refusing to let him fight Puma and Pentagon. We get some more backstory for Mil, who was apparently a child that Catrina saved from dying so clearly Catrina is older than we realise. She looks pretty good for her age I’d say.

Muertes is not out on his throne tonight.

Sexy Star vs. Kobra Moon

This is Sexy Star’s return match to the show and they paired her with the worst wrestler on the whole roster. Don’t get me wrong, Star is pretty bad herself but Kobra Moon is a whole other level of bad. Kobra was on defence for much of this match and god damn her selling is just as bad and awkward as her offence. The Mack and Marty the Moth both came out during this match, which led to the distraction finish. At least it was short. Kobra Moon wins with a Dragon Sleeper DUD

We get a great, cheesy commercial for Famous B who wants to help people become famous. That seamlessly transitions into Rey Mysterio and Dragon Azteca Jr. training in a dojo somewhere.

Another cool promo package, this time for King Cuerno and his match with Fenix later tonight. This was more like a traditional wrestling promo package than what LU have done in the past but it was still very well done and had great production values.

Prince Puma vs. Pentagon Jr.

This was a fine match, it was very clear that neither man was really giving it their all however which sort of makes sense given the finish. Mil Muertes came out half way through the match and took out both Pentagon and Puma for the disqualification. Again, the match itself was fine but obviously never really got out of first gear which is fine for what it was. No Contest ** ¾

Muertes and Catrina are shown backstage and Mil promises to defend his title against Puma and Pentagon next week. It seems like they are teasing some tension between Mil and Catrina.

Matt Striker and Vampiro tell us that Aztec Warfare is coming back in three weeks. Last year’s match was incredible, hopefully this one will be just as good.

King Cuerno (c) vs. Fenix (Ladder Match) (Lucha Underground Gift of the Gods Championship)

This was very different to most modern ladder matches. Instead of a crazy car crash spotfest we got a more meticulous destruction of Fenix by King Cuerno. Of course, we did get some cool spots such as the finish of Fenix finally coming back and putting Cuerno through a table and some balcony brawling by both men. The ladders in this match were actually used as weapons instead of props to create contrived spots which is often the case for ladder matches, in fact I don’t think either man even climbed a ladder until the final minutes of the match. I am a big fan of the modern ladder match, but getting something like this every now and then is a real joy. Fenix wins the title *** ¾

Overall: 5.5

I still have many of the same problems with this show as I have had this season, everything feels very stagnant and it just doesn’t have the energy and excitement that last season had, but King Cuerno and Fenix continue to deliver and be the MVPs of the season. Hopefully with Aztec Warfare on the way things will start to pick up.
