WWE NXT 10/2/16 Review

Air Date: 10/2/16

This is the first in a series of shows taped in the CFE Arena, a much larger venue, which gives the show a much needed fresher feel.

Baron Corbin vs. Johnny Gargano

Corbin continues his crusade against indie wrestling taking on Johnny Wrestling. This felt like it was a long match, it felt like it almost 15 minutes. That said, there was a lot of cool stuff in this and Gargano looked good and joins the very short list of wrestlers to get a good match out of Baron Corbin. Corbin pins Gargano with the End of Days ** ¾

Sami Zayn cuts a good promo backstage talking about his match with Joe next week. And then we get another weird vignette for the Vaudevillains.

Hype Bros (Mojo Rawley and Zack Ryder) vs. John Skyler and Corey Hollis

Solid squash match for the Hype Bros. The crowd seemed super into them, especially Mojo whose charisma and ability to get over with crowds is underrated I feel, which made the match a lot easier to watch and raised it up a lot in my opinion. Ryder pins Skyler with the Hype Ryder **

Quick backstage promo between Bayley and Carmella about their title match, it feels like they are teasing a Carmella heel turn.

Alexa Bliss (w/Blake and Murphy) vs. Cameron

This wasn’t awful, Cameron still can’t wrestle for shit and seemingly almost injured Alexa but her character work is improving a little. Maybe. Alexa pins Cameron with a Sparkle Splash * ¼

American Alpha and Enzo and Big Cass cut a backstage promo hyping a match for next week, I don’t know what the match was because I couldn’t stop smiling seeing these two teams interacting. Great great stuff.

Elias Samson vs. Jesse Sorensen

This was actually a pretty decent squash, Elias really went after Jesse and showed some great aggression. The crowd hated every second of this though, eventually we need to know more about the drifter or at least have him do something other than squashes. Samson wins with a neckbreaker * ¾

Bayley (c) vs. Carmella (NXT Women’s Championship)

This was maybe the best performance Carmella has had, she looked like she really belonged in the ring with someone the calibre of Bayley. There was nothing crazy in this match and it doesn’t hold a candle to the Four Horsewomen title matches but everything was worked well and Carmella firmly had the crowd behind her. Going into this match I thought it would be a total carry job by Bayley, and she did do much of the heavy lifting in this match, Carmella more than pulled her weight. Bayley retains with a rollup *** ¼

Eva Marie and Nia Jax attack Carmella after the match, and Asuka comes out to make the save. The staredown here between Nia and Asuka made me really want a match between these two, even if it probably wouldn’t be that great. Asuka stares down Bayley to end the show, so she’s clearly the next contender for Bayley’s title. I am really liking this gimmick of Bayley taking on a cavalcade of opponents.

Overall: 5.5

Awesome main event and a couple of pretty good matches, this is more like it and it can’t be overstated how much a difference the new venue makes. Hopefully the show carries through the momentum of this show.
